Mumbai stricken by terrorist attack

Police in the Indian city of Mumbai say at least 80 people have been killed and 250 injured in coordinated terrorist attacks.  Media reports say India’s anti-terrorism chief is among the dead, but that has not been confirmed.  
 
The attacks happened in the city’s central business district. Two luxury hotels, the Taj and Oberoi, have been hit and both set on fire. One restaurant popular with tourists was also attacked. 
 
There attackers are said to have been looking for American and British nationals, and there are reports that hostages have been taken at one hotel.   
 
A number of explosions have also been heard around India’s economic capital. Gunfire is continuing in several of the seven locations under attack. 
 
Police say a number of unidentified assailants armed with automatic weapons and grenades were involved.  They also opened fire on crowds in the main railway station, and a hospital in the south of the city. 
 
There is no indication yet of who was behind the attacks, but four assailants are thought to have  been captured or killed. 
 
The White House has condemned the attacks.
