Thai protestors open fire on government supporters

Thai anti-government protesters blockading a highway leading to Bangkok’s old airport have opened fire on a group of government supporters.

Witnesses say at least two security guards from the anti-government People’s Alliance for Democracy fired half a dozen rounds at the government supporters. Three people were injured.

The shootings came as marchers, who surrounded parliament on Monday, converged on Bangkok’s Don Muang airport, where the cabinet has been based since demonstrators occupied Government House in August.

The action by the People’s Alliance for Democracy is the latest in a political crisis that began in 2006, when a similar campaign against the then Prime Minister Taksin Shinawatra led to him being deposed in a military coup for alleged corruption and abuse of power.
