Both Tbilisi and Moscow have accused each other of provocation after gunfire broke out near a motorcade carrying the Georgian and Polish Presidents.

It happened near a checkpoint at the South Ossetian de facto border. No one was injured and both South Ossetian and Russian troops have denied involvement.

There has been much cross-border gunfire in the area despite a ceasefire aimed at ending the August conflict in the Caucasus between Russia and Georgia.

“If anyone in Europe has illusions that Russia has changed its behaviour, let them come and see. The point is that it takes the bravery of this man to come and see it first hand,” Georgian leader Mikhail Saakashvili said, standing next to his Polish counterpart Lech Kaczynski.

The pair continued with their plan to visit Georgians displaced by the fighting. Some three and a half months after the conflict, many are still living in precarious circumstances.
