Rebel leader Laurent Nkunda says he will support a peace process with the government of DR Congo, after meeting with UN peace envoy Olusegun Obasanjo. The pair met in the rebel-held eastern town of Jomba, the Tutsi general said he had agreed to the envoy’s request to respect a ceasefire and open up an aid corridor.
The meeting came amid reports of renewed fighting, witnesses told of heavy artillery, rocket and small arms fire near the village of Ndeko, just north of Goma. The former Nigerian president held talks with DR Congo President Joseph Kabila on Friday, and said Kabila had not laid down conditions for talks with the country’s rebels. Fighting erupted in August in the east, displacing 250,000 people and raising fears the violence could spread through the region.
