Execution of Bali bombers sparks clashes

There have been clashes between Indonesian police and emotional supporters of the Bali nightclub bombers following their execution. Thousands of people, including many from hardline groups, gathered for the funeral of the three militant Islamists who were killed by firing squad.

Imam Samudra, Amrozi Nurhasyim and Ali Ghufron Mukhlas were convicted five years ago for the double bombings on Bali’s Kuta strip. The trio never expressed remorse, saying the attack was meant to punish the US and its Western allies for alleged atrocities in Afghanistan and elsewhere.

The two explosions on October 12, 2002, killed 202 people, mostly Australian tourists. Although there have been no major attacks since 2005, Indonesia is still considered a risk for tourists. A Malaysian man, suspected of masterminding the Bali bombings, is still at large.
