Obama landslide – in Dixville Notch

world news

| |

The first results in the US presidential election have gone Barack Obama’s way by 15 votes to six

The tiny New Hampshire village of Dixville Notch has maintained its tradition of opening its polling station at midnight and closing it about a minute later. It is the first time since 1968 that the village has voted Democrat.

With a population of 75 and only 21 eligible voters, Dixville Notch takes advantage of a state law which allows a precinct to close, if all registered voters have cast their ballots.

With every voter having his or her own voting booth, the process is swift and the count almost immediate.

While Obama may be pleased with his first win, he can only be hoping the rest of the day goes as smoothly.
