DRC rebels threaten to march on Kinshasa

world news

| |

Amid reports of new fighting in the Democratic Republic of Congo, there is a fresh warning from the rebel chief who is leading a campaign against the government.

Laurent Nkunda is threatening to take his battle to the capital, Kinshasa, unless the government agrees to negotiate with him.

Tens of thousands have fled the advance of the rebels, who say they are trying to protect the Tutsi minority from oppression.

The rebels stopped short of taking control of the eastern town of Goma, where UN troops are now patrolling the streets.

International efforts continue to tackle the humanitarian crisis and find a political solution.

The Red Cross came across one young man who says he walked 160 kilometres in search of safety.

He is one of the lucky ones who will now be treated – many others are having to fend for themselves.
