Iceland protesters call for snap election

More than a thousand demonstrators have marched in Reykjavik, furious at the role their country’s leaders have played in bringing financial chaos to Iceland. Iceland has had to go cap-in-hand to major international sources of capital. The protesters want a snap election and mass resignations from the governors at the central bank.

In Istanbul, the World Economic Forum wound up a three day meeting on a note of cautious optimism about the global financial crisis, including the belief that previously unthinkable collaborations will now provide a solution.

The Managing Director of the WEF, Borge Brende, said: “A new world order is likely to emerge from the current economic crisis. It is important that it is inclusive rather than exclusive and that it favours dialogue between nations.”

The meeting had focused on Turkey’s position as a bridge across Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Delegates heard that cooperation and consensus were the only ways out of the financial downturn.
