In a final dash to hit the jackpot, Barack Obama has taken his battle for the White House to Nevada, home of the gambling capital Las Vegas.

Republicans have been victorious here in eight out of the past ten presidential elections.

But this time around the Democratic candidate is said to be ahead in the opinion polls here by as much as 12 points.

Obama said: “After decades of broken politics in Washington, after eight years of failed policies from George W Bush, after 21 months of a campaign that’s taken us from the rocky coasts of Maine to the sunshine of Nevada, we are three days away from change in the United States of America.”

Observers say Nevada’s burgeoning Hispanic population will be crucial to Obama’s chances for victory here. The community represents a quarter of the population.

This is one of the handful of key battleground states where the election is expected to be decided.
