Although the campaign has been dominated by the economic crisis, the environment and the cost of energy are still hot topics in the US presidential race.

In the final days of the campaign, John McCain has been keen to show that energy independence remains a top priority for him: “Senator Obama is very eloquent, but listen carefully to his words. He says he will quote “consider drilling offshore.” When I’m president we’ll drill offshore and we’ll drill now!”

The Republican candidate also reiterated his plans to develop alternative sources of energy : “So we will invest in all energy alternatives, wind, solar, tide and safe nuclear power and we’ll invest in clean coal technology my friends.”

Whoever is elected, analysts agree natural gas will be the winner in the next administration, acting as a bridge between oil and future renewable energy sources.
