As the US election enters the final week, John McCain appears to be making ground on his White House rival Barack Obama.

A poll today puts the democrat only four points ahead of McCain, slashing earlier surveys which gave him a massive 12 point lead.

With the apparent gap closing, the two continue to exchange blows over the economy.

“After 21 months and three debates, Senator McCain still has not been able to tell the American people a single major thing he’d do differently from George Bush when it comes to the economy. Not one thing,’‘ claimed Obama.

With McCain banking on voter fear of Obama tax increases, the Republican is pledging tax cuts and more jobs claiming his rival will punish small businesses with tax hikes.

“America didn’t become the greatest nation on earth by giving our money to the government to redistribute. In this country, we believe in spreading opportunity for those who need jobs and those who create them,’‘ he said.

With reported in-fighting breaking out among Republicans worried about the scale of any possible defeat, McCain will be buoyed by news he is making inroads into Obama’s lead.
