McCain battles on despite Obama poll lead

As the American Presidential election campaign heads towards its final days Republican candidate Senator John McCain is battling on despite his Democrat rival Barak Obama holding a commanding lead in the opinion polls.

McCain is playing defence against Obama in about ten states which outgoing President George Bush won in 2004. Worryingly for his election campaign managers McCain is struggling in Western states which normally vote Republican. Out on the stump in New Mexico he was clearly in fighting mood.

McCain told supporters:’ I’m and American and I chose to fight. Fight for a new direction for our country. Fight for what is right for America. Fight to clean up thmess of corruption, in fighting and selfishness in Washington.’

Obama has been taking shots at McCain’s attempt to keep some distance between himself and Bush. He has been urging supporters to vote early. He has been using his record-breaking fundraising advantage to buy up media time and make what he hopes is a closing argument for the presidency.

He said: ‘Somewhere in this crowd are parents who said I might not have the right to vote, but my child he may be able to run for the Presidency of the United States. Nevada, that’s the American Dream.’

Voters are already heading to the polls . In the battlegound state of Florida many had to stand inline for hours before they could cast their ballots
