Belgian police dismantle people-trafficking gang

In the nick of time Belgian police have smashed a people-smuggling ring as it was on the point of bringing 200 people into Britain.

15 arrests were made in a dawn swoop on a number of safe houses in Brussels and Vilvorde where police discovered the illegal immigrants. Some of them had paid as much as 20 000 euros to make the trip.
50 were found in a Sikh temple.

“They wait in the safehouses until one night the organisation takes them to a parking lot on the E40 motorway where they’re slipped onto trucks bound for Britain, mostly without alerting the drivers,” said an investigating official.

The immigrant’s journey began halfway around the world, in the Punjab, heading towards Britain, the country of choice for immigrants transiting Europe.
Breaking the Belgian link in the chain took a year’s investigation.
