Strike cripples Belgian transport

A one-day general strike in Belgium is causing a gridlock in the transport network and hitting other sectors. Domestic and international train services, including Eurostar and Thalys trains, have been brought to a halt. Workers are protesting over what they say is government failure to tackle high inflation and the rising cost of living. Underground train and bus services are also affected by the action.

It is reported some hospital departments could also be disrupted, while some business groups are threatening legal action if unions try to picket factories. Several government departments could also be forced to close their doors, along with post offices and some school childcare services.

Inflation in Belgium hit a 24-year high of 5.9 percent in July.
