The Nobel prize for medicine or physiology has been awarded to three people who discovered viruses that cause deadly diseases.

Germany’s Harald zur Hausen discovered the link between a common virus and cervical cancer.

Two French scientists have also been recognised for discovering the virus that causes AIDS.

Francoise Barre-Sinoussi works at the Pasteur Institute in Paris and Luc Montagnier is director of the World Foundation for AIDS Research and Prevention.

The three get a share in the prize of just over one million euros.
