Kyrgyzstan quake – day of national mourning

world news

The first pictures of the damage caused by a powerful earthquake in a remote region of Kyrgyzstan have been taken – more than 24 hours after the tremor.

More than 70 people have been killed, including 30 young children, and hundreds more injured.

The quake, which measured 6.3, completely destroyed one village.

A strong earthquake also hit Tibet in the afternoon.
At least 30 people died near the quake’s epicentre – around 80 kilometres west of Lhasa.

Cut off from more populated areas by narrow mountain passes, many villages were difficult to reach quickly.

The president of Kyrgyzstan has declared Tuesday to be a day of national mourning.
