EU defence ministers have expressed their desire to end the EU’s military mission in Bosnia. The French say most EU states want it replaced by a civilian mission. EUFOR’s UN mandate expires in November, when the future of the 2,200-strong force will be decided. It has been in place since 2004, when it took over from a NATO force.

It appears officers say EUFOR’s military objectives have now mostly been met, and a more civilian operation needs to be defined. Last year the force was cut from more than 6000 men. One French idea is that a rapid reaction force could be formed to intervene if the situation deteriorates.
