A demonstration in Sweden by the protest group Reclaim the Streets descended into violence, with clashes between demonstrators and police. The march was called on the sidelines of this weekend’s European Social Forum in the city of Malmo. The ESF is a normally-peaceful gathering opposed to globalisation and attacks on the environment. But it has sometimes attracted more violent groups, advocating direct action.
The event began calmly, but tension rose as police moved in. Officers had intended to keep a low profile, but called for back-up to disperse the crowd.
Police said around 700 people took part in the demonstration; some 20,000 are expected this weekend as the Malmo Forum reaches its conclusion.
