They may look like splashes of colourful paint but these pictures come from the Hubble space telescope. They are the first ever detailed images of so-called filaments – vast but delicate but threads of gas that emerge from the centre of a distant galaxy. Scientists at Cambridge University say these spectacular pictures are helping to unravel a 30-year-old mystery; how these fragile structures have withstood the rigours of space for 100 million years?
