The world’s deepest and oldest lake – Russia’s Lake Baikal – is under threat from a nearby zinc mine. Nicknamed the Pearl of Siberia, it holds around a fifth of the world’s freshwater and is home to around 1,700 species of animals and plants, two thirds of which are not found anywhere else in the world.
