A man and his six-year-old son who were trapped when a pleasure boat sank on the River Seine in Paris have died in hospital.
The accident happened near Notre Dame Cathedral late on Saturday. About ten people jumped into the river as the small craft went down; all were rescued, but the man and his son were trapped underwater for several minutes before being pulled out by divers.
The boat foundered under the Pont de l’Archeveché which links the tip of the Ile de la Cité with Paris’ Left Bank. Two senior crew-members from a giant ‘Bateaux Mouches’ sightseeing vessel have been taken into custody as part of the investigation into how the tragedy happened.
