Zimbabwe power-sharing deal agreed

Zimbabwe’s political crisis could be over. Morgan Tvsangirai and President Robert Mugabe are to announce the details of a power-sharing deal on Monday, but officials say it has already been signed.

Earlier, Mugabe indicated agreement was near. When asked if a deal was possible he replied: “I hope so, I hope so, I hope so.”

South African President Thabo Mbeki said: “Certainly this region, and the African continent, and our many friends around the world, will, we are confident, respond to this particular challenge, give the necessary assistance, so that this political agreement that has been arrived at, succeeds.”

South Africa took the mediator role in the negotiations after horrendous violence tore Zimbabwe apart following the disputed presidential election in March.

The question everyone wants answered now is how much power has been given to long-time opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai.
