White House rivals mark 9/11 victims

The presidential candidates in the United States called a truce in their political skirmishes as the war for the White House was put in perspective by 9/11 ceremonies.

Barack Obama and John McCain joined thousands in New York on the seventh anniversary of the atrocity.

They suspended campaigning for 24 hours to greet rescuers, relatives and survivors of the worst attacks on American soil. More than three thousand died that day. Many of them are still unidentified, but not forgotten.

In Washington, President Bush dedicated a memorial to those who died in the Pentagon attack, and said that day had changed the world forever.
