Retrial in Heathrow bomb plot case

world news

| |

Seven British men accused of plotting to smuggle liquid explosives on to transatlantic airlines and blow them up midflight are to face a retrial.

Three of the men were convicted of conspiracy to murder on Monday. But a jury could not decide whether they intended to target planes – something all of the defendants denied.

The prosecution alleged a plot to blow up aircraft travelling from London’s Heathrow airport to Canada and the US. The jury failed to reach a verdict on four of the suspects. An eighth man was acquitted on all charges.

Their arrest in August 2006 led to the immediate disruption of thousands of flights and restrictions on passengers carrying liquids onto aircraft in hand
luggage.
