The town of Roquetas de Mar in southern Spain, bears the scars of violent clashes overnight. According to police, African immigrants set up barricades, and threw rocks and bottles at officers. They also set fire to two homes and burnt various parked cars. The killing of a Senagelese man reportedly sparked the violence.

A witness said the victim had tried to break up a dispute between other Africans and gypsies. “I believe his family in Africa today is devastated,” Daniel Serifo, of the Guinea-Bissau youth Assocation. “He was a guy who worked to provide for his family. We want justice.”

Police have arrested four men on public order offences. Three aged in their 30’s are from Guinea-Bissau and Nigeria. The fourth is a 19 year-old from Sudan. They say they expect to make more arrests. Three police officers were slightly injured.
