A “crucial” round of indirect talks between Syria and Israel has been postponed according to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
It is understood the talks have been delayed due to the resignation of an Israeli negotiator.
French President Nicolas Sarkozy is meeting with the leaders of Syria, Turkey and Qatar in an effort to find a path to peace in the Middle-East.
His two-day trip to Damascus is aimed at restoring ties between France and Syria.
President Assad was speaking at the start of a four way summit in the Syrian capital. Mr Sarkozy has offered to back direct talks between Syria and Israel when the time is right.
France played host to Syria in July. The French President is known to be determined to bring Syria back into the international fold.
