A double suicide bombing in Pakistan that killed around 60 people has highlighted the security challenges facing whoever takes over from President Pervez Musharraf.

Two militants from the Pakistani Taliban blew themselves up outside the country’s main defence industry complex in the the town of Wah. Workers leaving a munitions factory were caught in the blasts.

Pakistan is on the front line of the US-led campaign against al-Qaeda and its allies. The country has been hit by a wave of attacks on the security forces and civilians over the past year.

Musharraf’s resignation on Monday fuelled hopes that an end to political instability might lead to a new focus on tackling increasing violence.

But analysts say there are signs of deepening divisions between the main political parties, which were previously united in their opposition to Musharraf.

Chief among their differences is who should be the next president.
