Spain pays tribute to crash victims

world news

Spain is demonstrating its grief, after the plane crash at Madrid’s Barajas airport. Cities around the country observed a minute’s silence at midday, in memory of the 153 victims of Wednesday’s tragic events.

In Madrid, people gathered in the centre of the city, in Place Cibeles. The country will spend three days in official mourning. There will be tributes overseas, too. The Spanish Olympic Committee says the flag in the Olympic village in Beijing is flying at half mast.

Elsewhere in Spain, in Barcelona, people stood to attention in Place San Jaume, in front of City Hall.
