There is ongoing confusion about the Russian army’s movements in Georgia. An armoured column has withdrawn from central Georgian territory in what the Defence Ministry in Moscow reportedly says is part of a pullback. But whether this will turn into a full-scale withdrawal remains to be seen.

Russia is under increasing Western pressure to meet its own self-imposed deadline to pull its troops out of Georgia by Friday. But, on the road from Tbilisi to the war-shattered town of Gori, Russian forces are still deployed, according to reports today.

It comes as leading human rights group, Human Rights Watch, urged Moscow’s military to clear unexploded Russian bombs it says are littering Georgia’s countryside and endangering its population.
