Tropical Storm Fay threatens to become hurricane over Florida

A strengthening Tropical Storm Fay is heading towards Florida after killing more than fifty people as it swept across the Caribbean.

Cuba was the last country to fall in its path.

Low-lying parts of the capital, Havana, were mostly evacuated as heavy rains came down along with winds of up 80 kilometres per hour.

Thankfully, it caused little damage.

But Florida is not expected to get off so lightly, as Fay is forecast to be near hurricane strength – that means winds measuring a minimum of 118 km per hour.

The mood of local residents has seemed typically nonchalant — a strong storm or weak hurricane is unlikely to create a serious threat to the Keys — but many store owners and residents in Key West have boarded up their shops and homes anyway as a precaution.
