Arguments are raging over alleged Russian military operations in Georgia. International journalists report seeing Russian tanks on the streets of Gori, outside South Ossetia and just 60 km from Tbilisi. One report said tanks and apcs are heading towards the capital.
But Moscow continues to insist there are no Russian troops inside Georgia proper. However, it does not claim to have pulled out of South Ossetia, and the United States said it has credible reports of continued Russian attacks in the region. Washington urged Moscow to restrain what it called irregular forces from targetting civilians.
For its part, Russia insists there are still Georgian troops in South Ossetia.
Hostilities continue too in the other Georgian breakaway region of Abkhazia. Separatists there are victorious after forcing Georgian troops to retreat from the Kodori gorge after pouring in infantry troops with fighter jet back-up. Abkhaz leaders insist Russia was not involved in its own military operation.
