Former Soviet-bloc states attack peace plan

The leaders of the three Baltic States and Poland stole the march on peace efforts in Brussels by giving their own press conference in Georgia.

The Polish President said he did not agree at all with the proposed plan. The Estonian President, Toomas Hendrik Ilves, highlighted what they thought was lacking:

“We must stick to the territorial integrity of Georgia,” he said. “If we do not, and if we do not stress the territorial integrity of Georgia, if we allow unchecked aggression and invasion then we live in a very different world from the one where we think we have been living since 1991.”

Europe may have taken out the clause relating to the future status of Georgia’s breakaway regions to secure an urgent agreement, but thousands of Gerogians in the street overnight have made it clear the breakup of their country is not an option.
