Some of the tens of thousands of people who fled the conflict in South Ossetia have begun returning home.

But many came back to flats and houses that were little more than piles of rubble after Georgian troops shelled the capital, Tskhinvali.

The UN refugee agency estimated that around 100,000 people were forced out of their homes.

Around 30,000 South Ossetians headed into Russian North Ossetia while a few thousand fled south to Georgia proper.

Russia and Georgia have agreed to create so-called humanitarian corridors to help evacuate refugees.
The UNHCR said aid has started to arrive in the region.

Save The Children has launched an appeal to raise 700,000 euros to provide drinking water and shelter for those uprooted.
