Mikhail Saakashvili was addressing tens of thousands of demonstrators in a gathering full of nationalistic fervour.

“We are leaving the CIS for good and propose that other countries leave this body run by Russia,” he said outside Georgia’s parliament.

The grouping of nations was formed after the break-up of the Soviet Union.

Despite Moscow’s declared end to military operations, many in Georgia are sceptical that the fighting is really over.

Tblisi claims Russian fighter jets have been continuing to carry out air strikes close to the Georgian town of Gori.
