The Russian President Dmitry Medvedev says his country’s operation in South Ossetia is nearly complete, after claims that its capital Tskhinvali is under Moscow’s control. Medvedev, his Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and senior Russian military officers discussed the escalating crisis this morning in Moscow.

NATO has accused Russia of using excessive force and violating Georgia’s territory, as fighting erupted again in South Ossetia. At the same time, Tbilisi accused Russia of attacking targets in Georgia itself. Russian bombers were seen in the skies over the capital, and a radar station at Mt Makhata was destroyed. Georgia is now faced with battles on two fronts, after fighting was reported in its second breakaway region, Abkhazia.
