Kurdish terrorists are being blamed for a bomb blast in eastern Turkey, which killed nine soldiers and wounded two more. The soldiers were in a military convoy hit by a landmine detonated by remote control. Erzincan province has rarely seen such violence, but neighbouring areas have seen several clashes between the Turkish army and Kurdish separatists.

The banned Kurdish Workers’ Party, the PKK, said it bombed an oil pipeline running through Erzincan from the Caspian Sea last week, and warned it would attack again. Turkey said that explosion was caused by a technical fault, but sent special forces to hunt down the bombers behind today’s blast.
