Not long after Bernard Kouchner’s visit to Gori and there was confirmation that a warning of danger that made him run for cover was for real. From the town, smoke was seen rising in the distance, with Georgian helicopters appearing to strike enemy targets. The Reuters news agency quotes a reporter who says despite Georgian claims that Gori has fallen to the Russians, there are no signs of soldiers there. Much of the civilian population has fled, worried about further Russian attacks.
