American Vice-President Dick Cheney says he has called the Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili to express US solidarity against what he called the “threat to sovereignty” over the fighting in South Ossetia.

George Bush says he has told Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin “very firmly” that all troops in the Russia-Georgia conflict should return to the August 6, “status quo”.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev says Georgia must withdraw from South Ossetia and formally pledge not to attack the region.
