Relations between the rival Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah have sunk to a new low, with the arrest of Fatah’s two most-senior figures in Gaza.

Hamas acted despite apparent peace overtures from President Mahmoud Abbas. He had ordered his Fatah faction to release all Hamas activists arrested in the West Bank, but Hamas said they had not been freed, and seized Ibrahim Abu an-Naja and Zakaria al-Agha.

Tensions between the two sides rose after a mystery bombing last week in Gaza killed six people. Hamas blamed Fatah and arrested dozens of its supporters. Fatah denied being involved.
