No claimant for deadly Istanbul bomb attacks

No one has claimed responsibility for two bomb blasts on Sunday evening in a working-class district of Istanbul, which claimed at least 17 lives and left more than 150 wounded.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to visit the victims. The terrorist attack is the deadliest in Turkey since 2003.

Istanbul Governor Muammer Guler said the explosions were just 50 metres apart. They went off within 10 to 12 minutes of each other, and this left time for people to gather in the area of the first bomb — killing and wounding more.

Several newspapers said police were focusing their investigations on the outlawed separatist Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), although the PKK does not usually target civilians.
