A man driving a mechanical digger has been shot dead while carrying out an attack in Jerusalem say Israeli security services.

Eleven people are reported to have been injured when the heavy construction vehicle ploughed into traffic.

It is understood the driver was shot by a civilian and police officers.

Earlier this month in Jerusalem, a Palestinian driving a similar vehicle killed three people and injured many more before being shot dead.

The latest attack took place in a busy part of central West Jerusalem.

Three cars are said to have been badly damaged, including one that had been overturned.

Witnesses reported seeing the body of a man slumped in the cab of the vehicle. His identity remains unknown.

Israeli police called it a terror attack although no Palestinian militant group has admitted being involved.

The wounded were taken to hospital in Jerusalem for treatment.
