Russian films on the comeback trail

The curtain has come down on Moscow’s 30th International Film Festival after nine days of fascination and discovery, featuring guests of international renown such as Will Smith, Charlize Theron, Takeshi Ketano and Emir Kusturica. The event first held in 1959, featured around 200 films this year with 16 going into the actual competition, two Russian films were included but failed to win any jury awards. The festivals main prize, the “Golden St George,” was handed to the Iranian director Reza Mir Karimi for “As Simple as That.” Many in the industry agree that Russian cinema is still struggling to find a new identity. The break-up of the Soviet Union in the early 90’s saw a decline in Russian film-making, but recently there has been a turnaround, not to say a boom in domestic production.
