Calls are growing for the FARC to release all of the hundreds of hostages they still hold. In Ingrid Betancourt, the marxist guerillas have lost their most precious bargaining chip. She believes they should stop trying to negotiate and instead accept a peace deal. She said last night:

“I think a humanitarian accord was an option at one time, but I think now the position is no longer negotiable. I think the FARC should unilaterally release their hostages because really they have nothing more to lose. The FARC has already lost everything.”

Betancourt’s wish was echoed by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who congratulated his Colombian counterpart Alvaro Uribe over Wednesday’s daring rescue operation.

The two have been at loggerheads over how to deal with the FARC.

Meanwhile two FARC guards captured during the rescue have been paraded before the cameras as the Colombian army basks in its success.
