Fur restrictions approach with warmer weather

With summer at Europeans’ doorsteps, Brussels is poised to tighten restrictions on imported pelts from seals killed in Canada. A decision is due later this month. This would include demanding guarantees that the sometimes-only three-month-old prey is dead before it is de-skinned.

Earlier this week, anti-seal hunt demonstrators protested outside EU headquarters. They said policing all seal culls to ensure the pelts are harvested humanely would not be possible.
Therefore, they want a total ban on seal products from all countries involved in commercial hunting for pelts from the young animals. That includes Canada, Russia, Finland and Greenland – which is Danish. Canada this year increased its cull quota to 275,000.
