Hundreds of Palestinians have stormed the Rafah border crossing into Egypt in a desperate bid to get out of Gaza. Clashes erupted as crowds tried to force their way out. At least six Egyptian border police were reported injured.

Rafah is Gaza’s main gateway to the outside world. It has mostly been closed since Hamas’s takeover of the Strip last year. Egypt opened the crossing on Tuesday for three days, allowing the limited passage of people to and from Gaza. But frustration apparently built up over the slow pace of movement, with only around 200 Palestinians let through. Witnesses said no one managed to force their way across today.

Elsewhere, Israel re-opened its commercial border crossings with Gaza. For the first time in a year, shipments of cement were to be allowed in.
