Things are going from bad to worse for Britain’s leader Gordon Brown. As he marks his first year as prime minister, a humiliating defeat at the ballot box has left his Labour party reeling.

Labour never expected to win the by-election in the safe Conservative seat of Henley. But it limped home in fifth place, behind even the Greens and the far-right British National Party. This, added to a recent string of election losses, has sparked talks of a leadership challenge before the next general election, expected in 2010.
