As the US President George W. Bush arrived for dinner with Britain’s Prime Minister Gordon Brown, the more cruel of the political pundits were pointing out that despite a decidedly cordial relationship, the two men now had something very much in common. That is the lowest popularity ratings of their respective political careers.

The criticism on the streets was loud and aimed at them both. Demonstrators shouted: “George Bush is a terrorist” through megaphones, and held up posters depicting him as the devil. Others warned that Brown’s relations with Bush could bring him down.

While most of the anti-Bush demonstrations passed off without violence, there were some scuffles near the Houses of Parliament when protestors tried to break through police lines which were keeping them well away from 10 Downing Street.
