Google wins Prince of Asturias prize

This years Prince of Asturias award for Communications and humanities has been awarded to the internet giant google. A hot favourite for this years prize google won the award for its contributions to the internet.

In front of the panel of Judges, President of the Jury Manuel Olivencia announced the decision live in Oviedo, the capital of Asturias.

Co-founded in 1996 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, google’s search engines have become a global hit, making information universally accessible.

Each year the Prince Asturias foundation awards a series of prizes to individuals and organisations for contributions in areas such as Science, the arts and communications.

Seen by some as a warm up for the Nobel prize, winners receive fifty thousand Euros and a sculpture created by the Catalonian artist Joan Miro.

Previous winners of the award in the communication and humanities category include National Geographic. Last years notable winners were former US vice President Al Gore and singer song writer Bob Dylan.
