The father of Italian comedy is dead

The film director Dino Risi, known as the father of Italian comedy, has died at the age of 91. He worked with all the top Italian actors, including Sophia Loren, Vittorio Gassmann and Alberto Sordi, producing a string of pictures chronicling post-war life in Italy.

In 2002 he received the Venice Film Festival’s Golden Lion for lifetime achievements. One of his biggest hits was 1974’s Scent of a Woman, which earned him two Oscar nominations, and which was remade starring Al Pacino in 1992.

During the 1950s he produced a string of succeses, including Le Fanfaron and Les Monstres.
