Fishermen take fuel protest to Brussels

world news

| |

Police sealed off parts of the European Union district of Brussels as hundreds of fishermen demonstrated against soaring fuel prices. Fishermen fear going to the wall unless they obtain discounted diesel at 40 euro cents per litre as opposed to 80 cents on the market. The price of marine diesel has surged 30 percent in the past four months.

The industry wants the EU to raise the amount of financial aid that a government may grant its fisheries sector without upsetting European internal market regulators.
